Other Guitar Basics: Guitar Anatomy Playing Position
String Names and Numbers The strings of the guitar are numbered 1 through 6 from the highest to lowest according to their pitch, that is, from the smallest diameter (closest to the floor) to the largest. This is one example of when pitch contradicts physical direction, but we can avoid confusion by always speaking in terms of pitch. The outside strings (6th and 1st) are both E strings. We can differentiate between them by referring to the 1st string as "high E" and the 6th string as "low E".

Strings can be referenced by either their letter name or number. For example: "Play that note on the 4th string" or "Play that note on the D string"
